Field CharacteristicDescription
Action:HIR
Reason:APT
Descr:Appointment
Descrshort:Appointmnt
General Information:
  • Used to appoint an employee that is new to the CSU and has no previous employment record on this campus database or on PIMS. Includes temporary, permanent, probationary and tenure track appointees, as well as Rehired Annuitants and FERP participants. In addition, use this action/reason for At Will appointments such as management (MPP) and Executive (M98) appointees serving at the pleasure of the campus President, the Chancellor or the Trustees.

  • NOTE: The term permanent appointee confers no particular status to the employee.

  • Refer to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 for information on verifying employment eligibility.

  • Written approval from CalPERS is required when an employee wants to rescind his/her retirement. Campuses are required to maintain the written authorization from CalPERS on file. This action/reason can only be used under this circumstance if the employee was employed at another campus or agency covered by CalPERS. Otherwise a REH/REH would be used.

  • CSU Faculty action if this is a tenured appointment.

  • Employee must be new to this campus and not an employee prior to conversion to PeopleSoft.

  • Rehired Annuitants and FERP participants qualify for this action/reason if their prior employment was not at your campus. The employee may have retired from another CSU campus, another agency administered by CalPERS or the State Teachers Retirement System, otherwise a REH/REH would be used.

  • Employees on J-Visa cannot be hired permanently.

  • Job Codes 2360/2361 may not be temporary appointments per Technical Letter 79-04.

  • The expiration date of appointment must be in compliance with the appropriate MOU for represented employees, or other employment agreement for non-represented employees.

  • The type of Agency and the FICE code (School Code) for higher education agencies, from which the employee was recruited, must be entered for all full-time faculty appointments.

  • The 4 types of appointments must be distinguished by Empl_Class as follows:

 -Regular and continuous: G-Regular
 -Temporary: 3 - Temp 3 Year, B- Intermittent, H-Temporary
-Special or Immediate Pay: T-Immediate Pay
