Comp Rate

Employee’s base salary rate. For actual rate of pay, see Compensation Rate.

Valid Value Rule(s):
  • Comp Rate must be based on the same compensation frequency as listed in the CSU Salary Schedule for the job code/grade.
  • Comp Rate must be the full-time salary rate if based on a monthly compensation frequency ($$$$.00)
  • Comp Rate must be the hourly rate if based on an hourly frequency ($$$.¢¢)
  • Comp Rates below the salary range for the job code/grade are not permitted. 
  • Comp Rate should be $0.00 for Non-Employees.
  • Use the Pay Plan Calculator reference to calculate the equivalent 12/12 Comp Rate for 10/12 and 11/12 pay plan employees.
  • For Immediate Pay employees, two Comp Rates are used; refer to the Immediate Pay - Hire and/or  Issue Immediate Pay BPGs.
  • Comp Rates above the salary maximum (see also http://www.calstate.edu/hr/delegationofauthority - Red Circle Rate and Payment Over Salary Range Maximum):
  •  Admin IV:  must be authorized by the Vice Chancellor for HR, or Chancellor as appropriate.
  • Other non-represented:  must be authorized by the President (via HR Director or Assoc VP for Acad Personnel). 
  •  Represented:  only red-circled rates over the maximum are permitted.

Impacted Fields:
  • Under Multiple Components of Pay, the Comp Rate is one of the fields used to calculate the Compensation Rate. 
  • Apply FTE and Comp Rate will determine the Compensation Rate if less than full-time.
  • If Comp Rate exceeds the salary range, the Red Circle Date also must be completed. 
  • Anniversary Code may need to be reset if Comp Rate reaches/exceeds SSI Max or Max. (see SSI max rules under Anniversary Code

If Comp Rate is outside of salary range for the job code/grade; see valid value rules above: 

“Warning -- Hourly Rate is greater than the maximum specified in the Salary Grade Table. (1000,33)

A maximum hourly rate is specified in the Salary Grade Table, and the hourly rate entered on this panel is greater than that maximum.

If the specified hourly rate is correct, leave as is. Otherwise, enter the correct hourly rate.”

“Warning -- Hourly Rate is less than the minimum specified in the Salary Grade Table. (1000,32)

A minimum hourly rate is specified in the Salary Grade Table, and the hourly rate entered on this panel falls below that minimum.

If the specified hourly rate is correct, leave as is. Otherwise, enter the correct hourly rate.”

If change in Comp Rate is greater than 20%; verify this is correct:

“Warning -- Change Percent is greater than 20. (1000,30)

One of the fields controlling pay rate (Compensation Rate, Pay Rate Change Amount, or Pay Rate Change Percent) has been changed, and the result is a pay rate change greater than 20 percent.

If this is correct, leave as is, or if appropriate change one of the fields controlling pay rate (Compensation Rate, Pay Rate Change Amount, or Pay Rate Change Percent).”

If Calculate Compensation is not clicked before saving (Warning first then Error if save again)

"Warning -- Pay Rate Change action is chosen and Pay Rate has not been changed on job row 2013-03-06. (1000,27)

If the Pay Rate Change action is selected, you should change the Compensation Rate value.

Leave as is, or change the Compensation Rate value if this is really a Pay Rate Change action, or select another Action."

ERROR:

"You have updated pay components on job row 1 without clicking the 'Calculate Compensation' button. (1000,912)

Click the 'Calculate Compensation' button in the Compensation page in order to apply your changes to the Job Compensation."

If Comp Rate is blank; verify this is correct:

"Warning -- Compensation Rate is zero. (1000,31)

Either the action is Hire or the Compensation Rate has been changed to zero.

If zero is correct, leave as is. Otherwise, enter a Compensation Rate.”
