QuickSight Ad Hoc User Guide for Author

1.0 How to Sign In to QuickSight

Use the following links to access QuickSight:

2.0 Create a New Analysis

  • On the QuickSight homepage, click 'Analyses' in the left-hand menu.
  • Click the 'New analysis' button.
  • Choose a dataset from the list, or click 'New dataset' to upload or connect to new data.

Note: You can also use the QuickSight search feature in the upper left corner to search for the dataset.

  • After you select a dataset, click the “Use in Analysis” button.
  • Click the ‘Create’ button.

3.0 Build Your Visuals

  • A blank visual is created on the ad hoc canvas.

Visualize Panel

  • Create a visual by choosing a visual type from the ‘Visualize’ panel in the top menu.

Dataset Panel

  • To add fields to the visual, use the field list in under the ‘Dataset’ Panel in the top menu:

3.1 Creating a Bar Chart

  • Bar charts are ideal for comparing categorical data across different groups.
    • In the ‘Visualize’ panel, click on 'Add'. Select the 'Vertical bar chart' or 'Horizontal bar chart' icon.
  • Drag a dimension (e.g., 'Union Code') to the Y-axis and a measure (e.g., 'FTE') to the Value field well.
  • Use the format options to customize the chart layout.

3.2 Creating a Pie Chart

  • Pie charts are useful for showing proportions of a whole.
    • In the ‘Visualize’ panel, click on 'Add'. Select the 'Pie chart' icon.
  • Drag a dimension (e.g., 'Job Code') to Group/Color and a measure (e.g., 'Employee ID') to the Value field well.
  • Customize slices and legend display in the format panel.

3.3 Creating a Table

  • Tables are effective for displaying detailed data in rows and columns.
    • Click on 'Add'. Select the 'Table' icon.
  • Drag desired fields into the Values section.
  • Format column headers, enable wrap text, and add totals as needed.

4.0 Set Filters

  • Click 'Filter' in the top menu, then 'Add'.
  • Choose a field, and define the filter conditions.
    • Click ‘Apply’.

5.0 Save the Analysis

  1. Click ‘File’ → ‘Save as Analysis’.
  2. Enter a name for your analysis and select a folder.
  3. Click ‘Save’.

6.0 Publish as a Dashboard

  1. In the upper right corner of the analysis, click ‘Publish’.
  2. Enter a dashboard name.
  3. Choose access permissions and click ‘Publish Dashboard’.
